Lyrical Lemongrass writes: He works hard for the money So hard for it honey He works hard for the money So you better treat him right! Times are bad.  Bald Eagle now has to resort to armwrestling to earn us a free meal. (Which he successfuly did! Woohoooo! He da man!) Okay.  The truth is, it was an Oktoberfest weekend at Euro Deli Grill, the Swiss-German restaurant where we celebrated Father-in-Law’s birthday, and instead of the normally quiet and slightly more dignified atmosphere, the place had come alive with loud music and games.  They had armwrestling for women too.  MIL and I took part, but I was whipped in the first round by a european ... read more

Lyrical Lemongrass writes: Sometimes, it can be really hard to be inspired to write a new post.  A milllion things flutter around in my mind, all demanding equal attention, and despite knowing that this is my own personal time to utilize as I want, the words just don’t come out.  Instead, my mind wanders.  My fingers reach up to a pimple on my face.  I scratch the scab off but the scar is ever present.  When will this scar ever heal?  It is right in the centre of my forehead, almost like a pottu.  I’m approaching middle-age, and I still have a pimple that refuses to leave me.  Even children know when to eventually leave their parents, but ... read more

Happy Deepavali!

Malaysia

Muruku
Lyrical Lemongrass writes: Last weekend was a busy time for the Lemongrass family as we bustled about the kitchen making traditional Deepavali goodies to be served on Deepavali Day. As usual, I arrived equipped with my cameras, ready to document each step for the benefit of my readers. “LL! Stop taking photographs and help out!” yelled my mum.  Mum isn’t a big fan of my photography. “But it’s for my blog. I neeeeeeeeed to take pictures!” I looked at her with my big brown eyes. That plea didn’t work on mum. She pushed ... read more

Thank you for the Traffic

Malaysia

Lyrical Lemongrass writes: As much I love the rain, the constant torrential daily downpours are more repetitive than Astro and tend to mess things up. I’m late for performances. Cancelled dinner dates. And worst of all, horrendous traffic jams. So here is my rant about rain, sung to the tune of Abba’s Thank You For The Music (food posts will resume after this rant): You think you’re special, in fact you’re a bit of a pour If you give me a soak, I’ve probably felt it before But you have a talent, a wonderful thing Coz everyone shivers when they see your lightning And your nimbostratus cloud All you want is to thunder out loud... read more

Lyrical Lemongrass writes: I have always admired the likes of Fatboybakes and the Just Heavenly duo.  Witty, good looking, multi-talented and really amazing bakers.  Just throw a bunch of ingredients at them, and they’re able to whip up something probably unpronouncable with Zs and Qs (notice how the more amazing the cake, the more the obscure consonants in the name?…which reminds me of this episode of Family Guy where Peter takes a shot in the dark at a Wheel of Fortune gameshow…the clue is Actor & Show and he comes up with Z, 4, Q, Q, Q and the batman symbol(!), then correctly guesses Alex Karras in Webster…hehehe). And on the opposite end of the spectrum, there’s me.  I am a reluctant baker.  (And talking ... read more

Lyrical Lemongrass writes: Sid’s Pub 1. The Malaysian mentality of keeping up with the Joneses goes beyond showing off material goods.  Now we’re even comparing illnesses.  Don’t believe me?  Try telling someone you’re ill. “I’m ill.  I’ve been throwing up and have had high fever for four days.  I’m miserable.” “Poor dear,” she says, and for a moment, you think that the world’s good and you will get the sympathy you deserve.  Hah.   It is a brief second before she continues, “Well, I have been coughing so much lately and my mother-in-law has given me this herbal remedy but I don’t think it works on me but I’m hanging on, dear, because I am surrounded by love ... read more

Lyrical Lemongrass writes: 1. Every couple of years, Bald Eagle disappears on his personal search for the Holy Grail, and this year, on his birthday, he was in Austria doing the Mexican Wave while celebrating Fernando Torres’ goal for Spain against Germany in the Euro 2008.  Now, this was going on while the good wife was at home, in Malaysia, meekly counting the days before his return, thinking of nothing else but of the immense love she had for her husband. Yeah. Absolutely. So naturally, there was no way of celebrating his birthday then.  And when he did come back, the good wife fretted over where to take him for his birthday.  Being the man about town, he had wined and dined at the best places, some of which the good ... read more

Lyrical Lemongrass writes: 1. Headlines: Blogger and friends detained for crashing wedding dinner Yes, Yang Arif, we crashed a wedding dinner.  No, Yang Arif, we weren’t aware that there was a wedding going.  Yes, Yang Arif, we saw the school buses and cars parked outside the restaurant.  And the wedding entourage, yes.   Yes, Yang Arif, I’ll get new prescriptions for my glasses. Use a different entrance, Yang Arif?  But the Bride and Groom and their parents were smiling at us.  I know, Yang Arif, we shouldn’t have walked through the wedding arch, especially since we were wearing just shorts and T-shirts, but in our defense, the other guests weren’t quite GQ material either.  Sorry, Yang Arif, no ... read more

Forget Me Not
Lyrical Lemongrass writes: Forget Me Not My birthday celebrations officially ended on Sunday, the 28th of September 2008 (a little over a month after the actual day), at about the same time that Felipe Massa of Ferrari drove off from the pitstop with a length of hose trailing behind him, with a very stunned mechanic at the end of it, but hey, who was I to complain about the very rude and untimely interruption to my homecooked birthday dinner?  Mmmm….delicious prawns, Mum….tell me the secret of this lovely pork dish…..whooooosh….hey….where’s everyone?  Hello?  Seriously, Massa could have chosen a better time to pull that stunt.  I insist on a replay.  Of ... read more
