Old Tea

Malaysia

Robyn Eckhardt writes: When Dave and I were in Cianjur a few weeks ago we stayed on a Dutch-era tea plantation. We were there to do a story on The Learning Farm, a wonderful organization that recruits kids at risk (under- or unemployed youth, dropouts, etc.) from around Java and teaches them to be organic farmers. Though we were there because of the food angle there's so much more than farming going on at The Learning Farm; I have so many good thoughts about this venture that I'm on the verge of gushing. For now, suffice it to say that we had a great experience and we'll post a pdf of the article when it ... read more

Ban Lee Siang Satay Celup

Malaysia

teckiee writes: To honestly tell you the truth... I have not tried satay celup until that weekend a couple of weeks ago (well, maybe more than a couple of weeks... back log la haha). Relying on Dave's GPS, we found our way to Ban Lee Siang. We passed by Capitol but the shop was really really full. Ban Lee Siang was full as well but they had more seats as the shop was larger. 45E, Jalan Ong Kim Wee, Melaka.. read more

boo_licious writes: the small stall trading in front of the houseI never tire from exploring Kampung Baru - it is like every nook and cranny there has good food, if I look hard enough. For me, the contrast between the old kampung houses and the modern skyscrapers always reminds me of how far we have come in development. Parts of the village has gone through some sprucing up with new pavements but to me, it is still a great place to search for Malay food. delicious ayam masak merah using ayam kampungWe wandered there last weekend, to search for this Nasi Ambeng stall. Braised left over roast duck
babe_kl writes: What do you normally do with your left over roasted duck be it homemade or store bought???So far I've done a Roasted Duck and Baby Tomatoes Angel Hair Pasta. My mom gave me one half of a frozen roasted duck which I didn't want to reheat in the oven. So mom told me to braise it with preserved soy beans (min see). What I did was chop up the duck into smaller pieces. Minced a large handful of shallots and a few cloves of garlic, set aside separately. In some hot oil, saute and sweat the shallots till fragrant before adding garlic. Continue to saute before putting in the minced preserved soy beans. Stir ... read more

Robyn Eckhardt writes: Last March we and a couple friends were on Bali, in a village in the northern hills, for Nyepi, the 'day of silence' that mark's the first day of the Balinese New Year. As soon as we returned to KL Dave's photographs from that trip - and there are alot of them - got buried beneath deadlines and other obligations, so I never posted much about it. But I just came across a stick drive full of photos, and I've been looking and remembering ... all the amazing experiences (culinary and otherwise) we had that week. The Balinese start their New Year's celebrations several days before Nyepi with Melasti, a cleansing ceremony (I'm simplifying ... read more

buffet 4 everyone

Malaysia

team bsg writes: When the panicky Gomen in June 2008 raised the price of petrol to 270 sen from 192 sen a litre , the nation was stunned .We were flabbergastedly amused however when the numskulls then proceeded to pay back car owners ( albeit those under 2000 cc only) a kind of reverse tax amounting to a few hundred ringgit a year , as sympathetic compensation , such were the childish antics of the shameless financial maestros running our dear hapless country !Today 3rd Dec 2008 , the same petrol price has now been fixed at 190 sen. OMG ! WTmf !Sorry to those who haven't yet got the compensation !But never mind ... read more

On Langkawi, Not About Food

Malaysia

Robyn Eckhardt writes: In September I spent some time on Langkawi to report my first non food-related feature article. The result - a piece that focuses on the precarious state of the island's natural heritage, appears in this month's issue of Travel+Leisure Southeast Asia - is viewable here: Download tl_sea_langkawi_feature.pdf I had a great time on Langkawi but it was a bit surreal to be in a strange place and not spend most of my waking hours exploring its food scene. In fact, I clearly remember only one meal - an absolutely scrumptious Thai-style beef noodle soup, taken at a shop called Kuey Teow Sup Perut (Bangunan Haji Taib, Bukit Tekoh - across from the hospital; 04/966-1357). Very highly recommended. My next assignment for ... read more
