Bringing together the best of independent food reviews

bloggers

babe_kl writes: Just barely a month ago, The Star "took" my photo and featured in their video without my permission nor crediting me. I just realised they were at it again last Sunday when they featured the article about Penang Chief Minister YAB Lim Guan Eng flying economy class. Apparently, The Star had lifted the photo of him and Ning Baizura from her manager's (Vernon Kedit Jolly) blog without permission and also did the same trick of cropping off his watermark! Oh boy, of course he kicked up a fuss just like I did. Well, since he's famous, someone got hold of Dato Wong Chun Wai, the Group Chief Editor of The Star, to personally call Vernon ... read more

Phang Key Dim Sum @ Happy Garden

Malaysia

dim sum
vkeong writes: I just returned from a dim sum breakfast in Happy Garden. Thanks to Chong for pointing this out to me. Happy Garden is located somewhere between Sri Petaling and OUG if I am not mistaken.. I have no idea where to go for good dim sum in Kuala Lumpur. They are either too expensive or received bad reviews from fellow floggers (food bloggers). So, I ended up in Phang Key Restaurant after extensive researching on Google lol. The dim sum is good and fresh. The variety is OK with the usual steamed or fried dim sum. There’s also a porridge stall next to it and I seen ... read more

Passions, Dreams and Italian Cooking

Malaysia

rokh writes: Maybe someday I would write my own cookbook. Maybe it wasn’t as impossible as it used to seem since so many bloggers had proven otherwise. Sometimes I just want to sit down and write and write and write some more. Now sitting on my bed typing just by staring at the bright screen against the endless darkness of my room, I feel so euphoric. At times when I was bit with writing bug, I found my hands read more

rokh writes: I confess; the real reason I had been missing in action since my sister’s wedding is watching an anime on baking bread, Yakitate!! Japan (Freshly Baked, Japanese Bread): - picture source from WikipediaI know I would be considered a tad too late in the anime world to be raving about this series now, where in fact it had been a wave two years ago! There are even bloggers who already made the only read more

Pavilion KL @ Bukit Bintang

Malaysia

food republic pavilion
vkeong writes: During my trip to Kuala Lumpur last week, I also visited Pavilion KL in Bukit Bintang. My first impression on Pavilion was huge, grand and very expensive. I don’t think I can afford anything inside lol. And maybe because it was a weekday, there weren’t as much people I expected. Food Republic, the classy food court is almost a dream come true for food bloggers like me, it has almost everything! The exorbitant price is something to think about though. I can only display the photos which fit my blog’s width. So, please go ahead and click on them if you want a bigger and better view.... read more

The Naked Truth

Pig_art
Robyn Eckhardt writes: At the end of last year in the Philippines, we were treated to lechon. The pigs, two of them, were brought to the house the night before they were to be roasted. They were killed before dawn on a concrete slab overlooking a field behind an old granary thirty feet from our bedroom window. In bed, Dave heard squeals right before the pigs met their end. It was quick, he said, just a burst of noise and then nothing. I'm glad I slept through it. I'd planned to wake in time to see them prepared for the roasting pit. The food journalist in me was determined to watch the whole process - the killing, the ... read more

Lyrical Lemongrass writes: 1. “Hi.  Would you like to go out with us?” Exactly a year ago, a couple of months after A Whiff of Lemongrass came into existence, I ventured out of my comfort zone and agreed to do the unthinkable - meeting strangers whose acquaintance I had made online.  It meant several things to me, but most importantly, revealing my real identity and feeling vulnerable under the scrutiny of several pairs of eyes belonging to seasoned bloggers was the biggest consideration.  Seasoned as in marinated in hot chili padi with lots of belacan and petai pods to boot!  There was Rasa Malaysia (photographer extraordinaire), WMW (human tripod extraordinaire), Boolicious (preeminent food blogger ... read more

Eel Fish Ball Noodle @ Heng Seng Coffeeshop

Malaysia

eel fish ball noodle
vkeong writes: Heng Seng Coffeeshop located along Jalan Kaptian Keling (formerly known as Pitt Street) sells very nice fish ball soup. You must be thinking what’s so special about fish ball soup? The answer is the ingredient used to make the fish balls - eel. Also, Heng Seng produces the fish balls themselves. Anyway if you are sushi lover you will know eel is also known as unagi in Japanese. I came to know this eel fish ball noodle last year during the Chinese New Year street festival held in the area. At that time I didn’t get to try it because there were too ... read more
