char koay teow

sister's char koay teow
vkeong writes: So, I went and tried Sister’s Char Koay Teow in McAlister Road before I left Penang. It it said to be one of the best char koay teow in Penang, with a notorious reputation of being overpriced and arrogant. I even heard that you would be charged for not ordering a drink in the coffee shop. I had to see it for myself to confirm this. The coffee shop was pretty empty when I went there. Only a few tables were seated and it didn’t seem as busy as I expected, since it’s supposed to be famous and all. To ... read more

malay char koay teow
vkeong writes: Another famous food in Bukit Mertajam is the Malay Char Koay Teow, or also known as Koay Teow Goreng Basah. This is the first Malay food in my food blog so you can be rest assured of its tastiness. Bukit Mertajam is the place where this variant of char koay teow originated. It is so well received that many have taken the opportunity to setup their own char koay teow stalls in Penang. Abang Is’ Malay Char Koay Teow’s ingredients include thin flat rice noodles (koay teow), beansprouts (taugeh), egg, lots of cockles (si ham) and huge sized fresh prawns. I have to admit ... read more

Robyn Eckhardt writes: It's Not All Business at Kuala Lumpur's Pasar Bandar Baru Sentul KLue  January 2008  Issue 111 Text: Robyn Eckhardt     Photos: David Hagerman Should the Ministry of Tourism want images with which to promote multi-ethnic, multi-religious, multi-cultural Malaysia, it needn't look farther than Pasar Bandar Baru Sentul ('New' Sentul Market). Ramshackle appearances aside, the thirty plus-year-old pasar is a Malaysia-Truly-Asia marketer's dream. The cavernous structure, anchored at one end by a Chinese temple,is located a short walk from Amru Ibni mosque and sits just across the street from Kuil Sri Maha Kaliamman (a Hindu temple). Inside, the market is a seamless transition, over the length of a football pitch, from Chinese to Malay and Indian sections, each populated ... read more

Wet? Or Dry?

Malaysia

Robyn Eckhardt writes: It's a question every char koay teow fan wrestles with at one time or another. Is this unofficial Malaysian national dish of stir-fried wide rice noodles best generously sauced and tinted an even black-brown? Or should it be taken light of soy and pale of color, every speck of wok hei'd chariness visible to the naked eye? I have long counted myself among those who adhere to a preference for the latter. Inspired versions of char koay teow served here, here, and here convinced me that light and dry is best. But a recent lunch at Jalan Klang Lama (Old Klang Road) stalwart Restoran Theng Wah made me rethink my ... read more

Neighbourhood Coffeeshop

Malaysia

teckiee writes: I had lunch with Kusahi-san yesterday and coincidently he mentioned about corner coffee shops near Equine Park's Jaya Jusco. I will most probably be moving out of my beloved P.J home to that far far away place in Serdang. ....wait... I think that place is even further than Serdang. Anyway, my parents have been checking on the renovation work progress for weeks now, sometimes I tag along sometimes just to make sure they have the opinion of the 'younger people' opinion because they tend to over look some issues ;p Where to eat near by? Well, this coffee shop is a 5 minute drive from my soon to be home. This nice clean ... read more

Delicious Ice Kacang in Bukit Mertajam

Malaysia

ABC-ice-Kacang-2
vkeong writes: For good ice kacang in Bukit Mertajam, most will head to a famous stall in Taman Jaya (directly opposite BM Country Club) We, BM lang refer it as 榕树下 ice kacang because the food court is built under a big tree. It is built as simplest as possible - place some tables and chairs under a big canvas shelter and walla, a place to eat! A bowl is only RM2 and comes with generous amount of “toppings” Why the double quote? Because all toppings are hidden beneath the ice! This is very different from ice kacang in Penang island, where the toppings are placed on top of the finely shredded ... read more

Sarawak Kolo Mee

vkeong writes: Kolo Mee is another famous hawker food in Sarawak. It is one of the most common food found in Kuching, you can see it being sold at every corner of the city. The nicest Kolo Mee I had so far was in Chong Choon Cafe again, in which I had nice Sarawak Laksa too. Kolo Mee noodle looks like thinner maggi noodle but more springy. The main ingredients are usually char siew, minced pork, some vegetable and topped with spring onions. Funny thing I noticed is that they all hide the vegetable under the noodle lol. At Chong Choon Cafe, a bowl of ... read more

Robyn Eckhardt writes: But Will Lard's Newfound Dietary Legitimacy Temper Its Allure? Hakka mee bathed in 'white sauce' KLue September 2007 vol 107 Text: Robyn Eckhardt Photos: David Hagerman The other day a friend passed along the coordinates of a hawker stall offering 'heavenly' char koay teow. As I wrote down the address she moved in close, lowered her voice, and added, with the tight little smile of a kid about to raid the cookie jar, 'He uses lard.' Lard occupies a special place in the the culinary imagination of Malaysians undeterred by religious belief or doctor's orders from partaking of the pig. To true believers, stir-fried Hokkien mee lacking lard and cracklings is like a day ... read more
