Robyn Eckhardt writes: 'Robyn!' Amy puts her hands on her hips and fake-frowns at me. 'Why'd you come so late!?' Amy works for Pak Din, who mans the grill at his stall in the Lake Gardens. When it comes to ikan bakar (barbecued fish) Pak Din has few peers. Arrive after lunch and you'll find slim fish pickings; his stall's daily array of delicious curries, sambals, and vegetables is also likely to be depleted. Which explains Amy's consternation when we stroll in at 2:45p. But this day we've come not for ikan bakar, but for another, less widely known Pak Din specialty: corn fritters. They're available weekday afternoons only, for just one hour. I've had the ... read more

vkeong writes: Because Nasi Kandar originates from Penang, it is no doubt the best ones are here too. This dish has managed to do very well in Penang with restaurants coming up at every corner. And that’s even with the tough competition among Pelita, Kayu, Kassim Mustafa and many others. Recently I have moved away from dining in these chain restaurants because of the expensive price. Shariff Nasi Kandar Istimewa in Gelugor has got to be one of the cheapest nasi kandar stall in the whole Penang island. And because Shariff’s Nasi Kandar is not only cheap but also great tasting, many people would line up as early ... read more

Lyrical Lemongrass writes: We all have certain food preferences, but sometimes, it is necessary to get out of our comfort zone and look beyond our malay-chinese-indian mindset to see what’s available out there. And I’m not talking about Japanese which is practically Malaysian. Let me tell you my story. A long time ago, a certain blogger (let’s call him the Verbose Stud) dropped me a proposition. An escapade, no less. Before you taint your mind with mental illusions and delusions, let me qualify this by saying that it was to be a culinary escapade. To cut a long ... read more

boo_licious writes: Oyster on iceI first caught wind of the Latest Recipe, Le Meridien Hotel's new cafe at last year's Food Bloggers gathering from Riz of Fried Chillies fame. Oozing praises for the new concept, he made it sound so tempting, I wanted to abandon the gathering and bolt straight away for the cafe. The magic word, he kept repeating was "Teppanyaki Ice Cream". Hold on, my brain was working out, "one can't fry ice cream on a teppan since it will melt right???"Prawns My curiosity was piqued hence, when I received an invitation to dine with Paprika, Lyrical Lemongrass and Cheryl Lum (thanks so much, ... read more

team bsg writes: In Southern India long ago , rice was served on a banana leaf laid out on the ground and eaten by ordinary folks with the bare hands , for practical reasons as utensils were hard to come by and the big flat waterproof tropical leaf perfect as a plate. The banana leaf is today passionately associated with South Indian cuisine , and this olden style of eating together with the famed curries becoming popular in Kuala Lumpur/PJ as a haute cuisine , & complete with some ancient rituals too.A few restaurants have gained an obscene following ( e.g. in Jln Gasing and Section 17 PJ ) for various reasons and some are ... read more

Robyn Eckhardt writes: In Bidor for a spot of duck noodle soup, we decide to investigate the town's market. It's not large and, by 10am on a Sunday, it's half-deserted. But we find spanking fresh fish, tiny clams of the sort that seem never to show up in Kuala Lumpur's markets, mounds of thick-stemmed paku (ferns) sporting tightly coiled fiddleheads, and lots of petai, or stink beans. Bidor is almost synonomous with this aptly named (but delicious) vegetable - bunches of whole pods are everywhere. (This photo was actually taken on the pavement in front of Pun Chun.) Small though it is, this market's a good one, because in its aisles can ... read more
