duck

duck noodles
Lyrical Lemongrass writes: Happiness is eating a simple bowl of noodles tossed in some dark sauce. Happiness is slurping double-boiled soup flavoured with chinese herbs. Tender duck meat that literally falls off the bones saturates the soup with its essence. Happiness is watching the steam fog up my glasses as I slurp up my noodles. The simplicity of which it is prepared, with just a sprinkling of chopped spring onions and sliced garlic, is a contrast to the complexity of its taste. Wolfberries add a natural sweetness to the taste of ... read more

Restoran LYJ, Sungai Buloh - Poon Choi

Malaysia

poon choi
Lyrical Lemongrass writes: I felt like a kid in a candy store. It was my first time trying poon choi, and I was mesmerised. It is said that a long time ago, poon choi was cooked in large wooden wash basins to serve the multitudes.  Things have evolved since, and in Restoran LYJ, the poon choi is served in a metal tray and kept warm on a portable stove.  The interesting aspect of this dish is that the ingredients are layered, starting with the bottom layer consisting of the braised foods like pork knuckles, fish stomach, abalone, mushroom ... read more

The Elephant

Malaysia

teckiee writes: I attended 'A Very Retro Christmas' dinner in The Elephant last night with almost 40 food bloggers and friends. Big THANKS for Precious Pea and Lyrical Lemongrass for organizing this gathering. Of course not forgetting WMW who helped out as much to make the dinner plans work. The initial plan was to have a little gift exchange going on, but the organizing team came up with a better idea. All pressies goes to the orphanage for Pick N' Brew's Sharity for Charity event. Before I continue with the food review, I want to say...I checked, I have boobs, they are real. And don't have the equipment. I'm 100% ... read more

Lyrical Lemongrass writes: “Where’s the party?” she asked for the 249th time. “Wait and see lah,” I said. “You mean it’s a surprise? Your surprises normally backfire, don’t they?” she sniggered. Pretty Pui was right. It is not human nature to keep secrets. As Sam and I toiled on the floral arrangements for the party that afternoon (a pre-wedding party of sorts and a bon voyage party to a certain extent), someone out there, in all naivety, was spilling the beans to Pretty Pui. SIGH. My Elephant, a Thai restaurant in the middle of a residential area in Section 17, ... read more

boo_licious writes: Sigh! What a weekend I had. Anyway, I'm not a person to dwell on the past so let's look forward to the week. I reckon the best way to start off a week is with something really sinful and this definitely is a winner in that category - Soo Kee Char Siu. Although this place is not opened tomorrow but I guess you can all plan for this for lunch on Tuesday since it is a public holiday in Selangor. This was a new discovery for me even though this place has been around for almost nineteen years. Located just off Jalan Ampang, the shop's frontage is limited with the flyover right next ... read more

Blue Moon Over Bidor

Malaysia

Bidor_7
Robyn Eckhardt writes: In Bidor for a spot of duck noodle soup, we decide to investigate the town's market. It's not large and, by 10am on a Sunday, it's half-deserted. But we find spanking fresh fish, tiny clams of the sort that seem never to show up in Kuala Lumpur's markets, mounds of thick-stemmed paku (ferns) sporting tightly coiled fiddleheads, and lots of petai, or stink beans. Bidor is almost synonomous with this aptly named (but delicious) vegetable - bunches of whole pods are everywhere. (This photo was actually taken on the pavement in front of Pun Chun.) Small though it is, this market's a good one, because in its aisles can ... read more

Duck Rice Porridge

Malaysia

Thanh_da_chao_vit_11
Robyn Eckhardt writes: That title is a bit of a test. We were curious as to how many would stick with this post after seeing the words 'rice porridge' up top. Known variously around the region as congee, zhou, khao tom, chao, bubur, and lugao, rice porridge may well be Asia's most underrated dish. Perhaps it's the unfortunate use of the word 'porridge' which, for most Westerners, conjures up images of gloppy oatmeal or lumpy creamed wheat. Maybe the untrained Western palate is to blame; for many of us rice is a bland, uninteresting side starch more suited to the task of sopping up sauce than serving as the focus of a meal. Whatever the reason(s), we find ... read more

a firm drumstick

Malaysia

team bsg writes: among gentle white noodles One variety of noodles proudly Chinese not yet fused into Malay & Indian cuisine locally (we think ) are these white soft strands called "noodle strings" or mee sua . Interestingly they are handsomely matched to a few signature classics such as this one here. We have not seen duck meat too in Malay & Indian cuisine . Must be a historical/geographical reason we guess . herbal soup with duck drumstick ( popular in Penang ) nice clear taste and quite slurpyingly delicious. Distictively a Chinaman speciality. although some avoid it for being too "tok" ( toxic , but see below... ) .   But we think ... read more

Nagomi Shabu Shabu @ Jaya 33, Petaling Jaya

Malaysia

boo_licious writes: Swish Swish...Recently, there has been an increase in new places to dine that I am slowly trying each outlet one by one. One such place in Petaling Jaya is Jaya 33 which combines an office tower and dining at the lower levels. What's good about dining here is parking is a breeze compared to the nearby Jaya Shopping Centre area which is forever packed. Assorted Vegetables To date we have only tried Oriental Pavilion which is part of the Noble House group, Cozy Corner (a branch from Ampang Park) and this place, Nagomi which serves shabu shabu and Japanese sushi and sashimi items. The owners also own another Japanese restaurant at Tropicana Golf and Country Club.... read more
