Robyn Eckhardt writes: What fun is getting from point A to location B if it's done on an empty stomach? No fun at all, say Malaysians, who view a road trip as an opportunity, or an excuse, or both, to engage in four-wheeled sport eating. According to Malaysian logic driving two hours from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh just to eat lunch might make sense ... but it makes more sense to add an extra hour to the journey, divert off the north-south expressway onto the old two-lane trunk road, and stop along the way for a meal-sized snack. We're not quite that hard-core - yet - but we are willing to drive for ... read more

Review: Kafe Pat Kin Pat Sun

PKPS - baked potato skin with chicken mushroom & cheese RM10.90
babe_kl writes: One evening, hubby managed to picked me up early since he was in town to meet his client. On the way home, he said he was hungry. Since we were about to reach Taman Shamelin, I suddenly recalled Shaolin Tiger posted about a western restaurant in the vicinity. As I wasn't sure where is the place nor the name of the place, I used hubby's N95 and the 3G service to check into Shaolin Tiger's page on this place. Finally found the details almost the same time we saw the shop front - Kafe Pat Kin Pat Sun! Thank goodness for technology ;-)The menu is very extensive. You can find western grubs, some local fare and ... read more

boo_licious writes: Stuffed Tofu PuffsI'm on the roll, this week with my second post in two days. Hopefully I can keep this up! Happy April Fool's day everyone. Do get up to loads of michief and play funny tricks on your fellow colleagues or friends. Seemed appropriate, I should post this today - the day of WIP's official opening. Sadly, I doubt I will be attending since I'm busy with training at the mo. Nevertheless, I did get a preview of the food (finally!), last week when we dropped by for dinner.Beef Kuey TeowAs everyone knows, the people behind WIP are Fred and Michelle, the same ones who own Souled ... read more

Welcome to Craft Expo
babe_kl writes: Last week hubby was at his client's place at Kompleks Kraf and noticed there is an expo going on. He went round and saw many interesting stuff so we decided to bring our city boiboi to check things out. They have allocated some free parking lots around. The one we parked were behind Prince Court Hospital which was labelled C which is a huge place but its kinda the rough it out kind. They just dumped gravel stones on a few parts to level the ground and have many pot holes. It's one big mess after a heavy down pour when ... read more

Lyrical Lemongrass writes: 1. It was the world’s cheapest sang har meen.  Or at least, that’s what it appeared to me in my well-protected cocoon. At only RM8.50 a plate with some fresh juicy prawns thrown into a lovely eggy sauce, I certainly had no complaints. I am not sure if I shall be able to find this coffee shop again on my own though. Ecstatic Eeyore had led me through a maze of shops quite like the catacombs of Rome, where amidst some beauty salons and shops selling cheap nail polish and hair products, there stood a coffee shop, rather displaced in the surroundings. It was a real coffee shop, not one of ... read more

Guest Post: The Big BM on Bali Babi

Malaysia

Img_1350
Robyn Eckhardt writes: After our 'Bali Bound' post went up I received an email from a pork-loving reader asking me to write about the babi guling (roast pig) in Ubud. On this trip we were nowhere near Ubud, and while we did sample a very nice plate of pork on our way from the airport to our accommodations in the northern hills, that was about it. But fortunately for reader Ying, while on Bali we met up with Brett Martin, a Brooklyn-based writer who's as crazy for pig as we are for chilies. After Dave and I returned home to KL Brett and his partner in crime J headed to Ubud, where Brett found porky ... read more

team bsg writes: For the adventurous and non-fussy eaters (that must be team BSG ) , Cowboy Town Rawang some 35 minutes countryside drive from Kuala Lumpur offers some exciting fillers, of the ancient Chinaman shoplot kind. There is a great variety of produce , from the forests , seas, lakes and farms. We sometimes catch some wannaBs ( no ! not team BSG ) foul mouth Golfers from the 4 nearby elite Golf Clubs fresh from their holed illicit 'winnings' indulging in some legitimate mega pot drunken prawns and obscene frogs, over extralong tiresome tales of the loose holes that got away.Though of course there are other smaller quick draws for the casual passers ... read more

Time Out Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia

Robyn Eckhardt writes: Dave and I are now contributing to Time Out Kuala Lumpur, which launches - today! I'll be writing a monthly feature about food (duh!) as well as reviews; Dave's photos will illustrate my feature stories. Time Out KL will be distributed quite heavily around the city, so if you're near a news outlet pick up a copy - the photos are much prettier in print (and most won't make it to the web anyway). read more
