Ipoh Sun Yuan Foong White Coffee

Malaysia

sun yuan foong coffee shop
vkeong writes: So, I received a comment from J2kfm saying that Nam Heong is not where the original white coffee came from. According to him, Sun Yuan Loong, a coffee shop located directly opposite Nam Heong along Jalan Bijih Timah is white coffee’s origin. Then, I remembered another coffee shop’s name which sounds like this. I went there immediately after my cuppa at Nam Heong. It’s called Sun Yuan Foong. Is there a reason why the coffee shops’ names are so similar here? The competition for the best white coffee is very evident in Ipoh with each claiming to serve the best, lol.... read more

Review: Pastries from Yik Kee Restaurant

YK - durian tarts
babe_kl writes: **Non-Halal**Last weekend I had to FFK the JFKA session cos we decided to drive up the hill for some, well I won't say it's relaxing, perhaps... fun? Hubby and I were happy cos boiboi said he was super duper happy. I'm sure he does but seriously it's not that fun anymore, for me at least, going round and round on children rides... quite harrowing when you have a crazy little terrorist that spin the bloody teacup in detrimental speed!!! We were glad to see him smiling ear-to-ear bumping around in the children bumper car ride. He did that 3 rounds before we dragged him away for dinner (more on that later). Being the kiasu parent, we ... read more

Never, Ever Live Next to a Bakery

Malaysia

Sansrival_2
Robyn Eckhardt writes: That nugget of wisdom popped into my head a couple of weeks ago in Butuan City, as I sat patting my mid-section after all but licking the plate on which had sat, just a minute ago, a slice of sans rival. Granted, it had been a week of non-stop eating (details to come). But it was really the sans rival that led me to the edge of the cliff and pushed me over. Our host, you see, lives next to his sister Margie's bakery. Nearly every meal closed with a parade, literally from the bakery's door to his, of wickedly delicious cakes, cookies, pastries. Sometimes a new batch would appear on the table just ... read more

boo_licious writes: Canton-I exterior Along the Promenade, which connnects the old wing to the new wing of 1 Utama Shopping Centre, a number of new eating places have opened - Pasta Zanmai, Carl's Jr, a vegetarian restaurant and Canton-I. Canton-I interior Canton-I is supposedly owned by the highly popular Dragon-I and opened in December 2007. A different menu is served here - noodles, rice, congee, dim sum items (fried, pan fried and steamed) and desserts. Similar to Dragon-I outlets, part of the frontage of the restaurant is the open kitchen. Here at Canton-I, you get to see the barbequed meats and the chefs cooking noodles. A small take away area for pastries is tucked at ... read more

durian puff
Lyrical Lemongrass writes: If I turned off the lights and looked away, would you suddenly light up and come alive? Would the delicious, creamy durian filling in your little bellies fuel you as you dance in the moonlight for the remainder of the night? Sweet perfection.  My durian tart.  Wearing a light crumble, a delicate hat, providing a shroud for the irresistible pleasures within. If I behaved and said pretty please, would you let me nibble on you?... read more

boo_licious writes: I love these teeny weeny bites. Oozing with sinful durian cream, one bite is never enough. Luckily the shop seems to know it, as they sell them in packs of 4 pieces for 60 sens each (RM2.40 per pack). Encased in a plastic sandwich box, everyone loves these puffs. I once brought them to a King Crab dinner and the guys - tankiasu, Jackson and Jason gave their thumbs up.The bakery also sells various pastries - egg tarts, durian tarts, durian swiss roll, pineapple tarts, sandwiches and etc. Getting here is okay if you take the LRT but if you're driving past to just pack a few, there's no ... read more

Review: Durian Cream Puff from Happy Meal

Malaysia

Happy - durian cream puffs
babe_kl writes: Short post again cos chasing deadline.I took note of teckiee's post about this Happy Meal place at Jalan Hang Lekir (Chinatown/Petaling Street area). I've always noticed the place whenever I buy flowers next door but never bothered to check out what they offer. It's basically a small corner selling sandwiches, pastries and drinks. Thanks to teckiee, I stopped by one day when I passed by there. Otherwise I would have continued walking.I saw a lady busy piping out the pastry for the cream puffs onto trays. A couple of them were filling them with cream. Checking out the display I saw pineapple tarts, coconut tarts, kaya swissroll, cream puffs BUT it was the signage they ... read more

babe_kl writes: Most of us, KLites, are familiar with Tong Kee's mouth watering egg tart of flaky pastry and eggy custard. Tong Kee's egg tart is by far the best in Klang Valley in my book lah, well excluding those I've eaten in Hong Kong. However, I discovered recently that they have another version where the pastry is made with butter! I bought 2 last week just to test out.The butter version is RM1.30 in yellow paper casing wherelse the normal version is priced at RM1.20. As you can see below, the butter pastry looked less flaky. The first bite, it was crispy!!! The crispyness is ... read more
