teckiee writes: Yes, I am a sucker for food! I went ahead with my trip to Hanoi even my stomach told me not too. But I was alright. I depended a lot of my medication. Anyway, enough of my travelers diarrhea. I'm all good in Hanoi and all good now. Let me get to the goodies.Starch! (5,000 Dong) It looked like porridge from far but when the bowl reached my lap, starch boiled with pork bones. Tasted like ...well.. starch... with the pork flavoring which was not too bad. That was my first meal in Hanoi. My other friends ate this tomato spicy soup noodles which tasted really good. One of the better ... read more

boo_licious writes: Nasi LemakContinuing my Petaling Jaya trail of great food is this particular mamak stall. Located at Restaurant Sun Fatt Kee, just across from Seapark market, business here starts when night falls. They share the premises with a bak kut teh stall and during the day, you can get excellent Teochew porridge here with fried clams, assam fish and etc. Seems they're well known among PJ-ites and is also known as the "Maybank mamak", since they're right in front of the bank.Famous Fried ChickenTables and chairs will be set up around the shop and even outside on the side of the road. Every night it is super ... read more

boo_licious writes: Adorable tea cupI have been a fan of Fong Lye's food at their Desa Sri Hartamas outlet and even blogged about it twice. Recently, they have opened a new outlet at The Gardens. Looking modern with white furniture and flower motifs in purple, it is a good place to relax after some shopping. 3 Cup Chicken (RM18.80++) Unlike the other outlets, which serve cooked dishes with rice or porridge, this outlet features more snacks and set meals. Every set meal ordered is served with a variety of items.Pork Rice (RM18.80++) One of the items ... read more

Robyn Eckhardt writes: A Pakistani Brings the Flavors of His Hometown to Kuala Lumpur KLue  Issue 110  December 2007 Text: Robyn Eckhardt     Photos: David Hagerman It's a long way from KL to Lahore. As we suffer through dripping skies and thick, wet heat, the capital city of Pakistan's fertile Punjab plains is awash in sunlight and shivering through temperatures that dip to freezing. While we gear up for the commercialized shopping frenzy that is Christmas, Lahoris ready themselves for Moharram, the first month of the Muslim calendar and the most sacred after Ramadan. As we thrill to the opening of not one, but two new shopping malls, the architectural heritage sites that dot Pakistan's storied second city give a nod to ... read more

A Nice Place to Be

Robyn Eckhardt writes: Sunday in Penang, and we're out the door at first light. An old market on Carnavon Street - and, most alluringly, the non-permanent stalls that line the lane just outside its main entrance -  beckons, but the murky clouds overhead aren't cooperating. Moments after we arrive - plop! plop! plop! Big, fat drops that portend a long, soaking shower. And, as usual, we're umbrella-less. Luckily, Georgetown's streets hold no shortage of spots to ride out a storm. We look right: one coffee shop on the corner, another halfway down the block. And then left: two coffeeshops within a stone's throw of each other. I like the look of the big ... read more

boo_licious writes: Braised Peanuts When it comes to Crystal Jade's restaurants, my whole family are great fans. They regularly dine at the Singapore and China outlets till they have their favourites. Recently, with the opening of the two new malls, The Gardens and Pavilion, Crystal Jade has been expanding. To add to their existing outlets - Crystal Jade Lai Mian at Lot 10 and C-Jade Express in Mid Valley Megamall, they now have Crystal Jade Kitchen and C Jade Meal Cube at Pavilion and Crystal Jade Restaurant at the Gardens. Steamed Spinach with Garlic Dumpling (RM7++) Each new outlet has slight variations - the Crystal Jade Meal Cube is said to serve Western food while the Crystal Jade Kitchen ... read more

Duck Rice Porridge

Malaysia

Robyn Eckhardt writes: That title is a bit of a test. We were curious as to how many would stick with this post after seeing the words 'rice porridge' up top. Known variously around the region as congee, zhou, khao tom, chao, bubur, and lugao, rice porridge may well be Asia's most underrated dish. Perhaps it's the unfortunate use of the word 'porridge' which, for most Westerners, conjures up images of gloppy oatmeal or lumpy creamed wheat. Maybe the untrained Western palate is to blame; for many of us rice is a bland, uninteresting side starch more suited to the task of sopping up sauce than serving as the focus of a meal. Whatever the reason(s), we find ... read more

Robyn Eckhardt writes: Juggling orders of bak moi (pork porridge) outside Yi Garden Kafe, Jalan McCallister ...there's good eating - especially in Penang, where the art of cooking (not just grilling) over charcoal is alive and well. Cooking over charcoal requires dodging leaping flames and live sparks Our article on charcoal cooking in Penang appeared in yesterday's (November 22) South China Morning Post. If you're a subscriber you can check it out online.  If you're not, enjoy these photos that didn't make the final cut. Hon Kee Porridge (Off Petaling Street)

Porridge with raw fish
Lyrical Lemongrass writes: One of my favourite meals is a bowl of rice porridge. I love how the steam mists my glasses as I inhale the scent of sesame oil that is drizzled onto the porridge. I love the smooth texture, and enjoy the sensation of the almost liquid substance gliding down my throat. The strips of raw sliced ginger and chopped chinese parsley all heighten the overall sensation of consuming this deceivingly simple dish. Fried intestines (RM3) are a lovely addition too. The crunchy pieces, a little sweet, get slightly softened when ... read more
