The Feel-Good Factor

Malaysia

Hanh_hong_3
Robyn Eckhardt writes: Saigon is not the most cordial city in the world. It's a little rough-and-tumble, a bit jagged-edged, pretty aggressive. Energetic, exciting, adrenaline-pumping - yes. Warm and gooey? Not exactly, and especially not when compared with the larger cities of its Southeast Asian neighbors. When you're a resident, the place starts to wear on you a bit. Hong Hanh was our Saigon oasis of niceness. From our first appearance at the top of the precariously steep and narrow flight of stairs that lead to Hong Hanh's second-floor perch we were never made to feel anything but welcome. We didn't speak a word of Vietnamese (shame on us, but that's the way it was) and no one ... read more

Review: Huen Kee Claypot Chicken Rice

Malaysia

HK - Huen Kee Claypot Chicken Rice
babe_kl writes: **Non-Halal** I’ve been following Heun Kee up and down the road for the past 10 years! Oh no, no!! Heun Kee is not a super star nor a celebrity, just that I’m the Claypot Chicken Groupie!!! I’ve lost count the number of times they’ve shifted for the past 15 years but thank goodness, Heun Kee is now rooted at the corner of Jalan Yew. When they first started their business in this current lot, the cooking of claypot rice was done at the back kitchen but I guess that was a bad idea since the charcoal stoves are indeed an advertisement to them to attract customers. So they moved the stoves to the front and now no one can missed them out ... read more

Lao Bitter

Malaysia

Lp_on_the_road
Robyn Eckhardt writes: Our first trip to Laos, in 1994, was our virgin foray into Southeast Asia. We were living in Hong Kong, and had lived in and travelled around China, but everything south was, to us, The Unknown. We had three weeks around Christmas. Someone told me Laos was 'incredible' - or maybe I read it somewhere - and so we booked tickets and took the plunge. Landing in Vientiene was a jolt. The city (if you could even call it a city, then), with its single traffic light, seemed as far from Hong Kong as the moon. With their ready smiles and soft voices, Laos were to 'Hongkies' as day is to night. And the food!Lounging ... read more

olive bread
Lyrical Lemongrass writes: Bald Eagle and I were whizzing up Jalan Semantan towards Damansara Heights at about 11.30 this morning where the plan was to enjoy some nice sausages from Jarrod & Rawlins, when suddenly we spotted the relatively new building complex, 10 Semantan, on our left. "Heylet'sgothere." "Yahorwehaven'tbeento10Semantanbefore,ok." "Youknowwhat'sgoodthere?" "Yupquickturn!!" The entire conversation happened in a span of 5 seconds. With my quick reflexes, I deftly maneuvered my little car into the sharp turning on the left, with barely inches to spare (Bald Eagle may have a different story to tell, but this isn't his blog, is it? *wink*). Bald Eagle was in the ... read more

vkeong writes: Today I had a spike in my blog’s traffic, almost 5 times the usual number of visitors. Considering it’s Sunday and it is also the day of the week I receive the least visitors, it was weird. So I checked the traffic referrers and surprisingly, it was TheStar online! They put up an article I wrote some time ago regarding Long Beach Cafe and the chicken chop I had. Woo hoo I am so excited, get the article here. This is the full excerpt of the article: Popular with tourists Compiled by SANGEETHA NAIR Long Beach Cafe in Penang serves excellent chicken chop, writes blogger vkeong from ... read more

Yummilicious Snacks

Malaysia

sausage topped bread
babe_kl writes: Found these pics in my flickr album. Totally forgotten about them. At times when I'm hungry at odd hours but lazy to go out to grab a bite, I will usually turn to my fave food - bread. Other than slattering them with peanut butter or making PBBT, most times I will rummage my fridge to look for stuff to go with the bread. The simplest is just spread some butter on a piece of bread, sprinkle with some grated cheddar cheese then top with sliced sausages. Top with more cheese and dot with chilli sauce. Toast till the cheese melts and chow down whilst it's hot. Easy but irresistable!... read more

Ingredients for a good vacation

Malaysia

Peak District
Lyrical Lemongrass writes: "What is the key," a little voice whispered in my head, "to a good vacation?" "Teacher, teacher, me me me, teacher! Ummmm....being able to see with your eyes what you could only envision in the past based on documentaries on TV and photographs?" the star student answered. Certainly, that is a plausible answer. "Photographs, for sure!" Hmmmm. Another good point. I view everything through my lenses, even when they are sometimes imaginary. Like when you wake up from a deep slumber, and the first thing you do is move your finger to the bridge of your nose to ... read more

Est Est Est, Liverpool, England

Game at Anfield, Liverpool
Lyrical Lemongrass writes: 1. I learnt a new word. Sitting at the Kop end of the Anfield stadium, I am moved to tears as I listen to grown men croon all their favourite tunes, surprisingly in harmony, as they wave their scarves in the air. There is a certain camaraderie amongst these hardcore supporters that move me. And then the game between Liverpool and Spurs starts. Soon after the 12th minute first goal, I hear gradually ascending sounds around me. "Fockit!", he mumbles. Mmmmm. Sounds like some type of British food. Probably in the same genre as Spotted Dick. "Fockit, lads!!", his voice is filled with frustration, ... read more

Review: Euro Deli Shop

Malaysia

ED - potatoes with bacon bits
babe_kl writes: **Non-Halal**Before Elcerdo (must click to view new outlook of website, very cute haha) arrives at our shore, Euro Deli is THE place to have our fix of German Roast Pork Knuckle. We usually patronise the outlet, Euro Deli Grill, at Jalan Yap Kwan Seng where it is a spacious restaurant as compared to the Deli at Damansara Kim. Nevertheless, this round we visited the Deli together with a bunch of friends.Since a few of us arrived pretty early and have gotten hungry staring at the various sausages and cold meat in the fridge, J decided to order some appetiser whilst waiting for the rest to arrive. She asked for a plate of potatoes ... read more
