The brave ones enter the waters like Jacques Cousteau and swim with the sharks. . But my baby chats….. . They get smashed.  .... read more

Yap Chuan Dry Bak Kut Teh @ Puchong

Malaysia

dry bak kut teh
vkeong writes: Dry Bak Kut Teh has always been on my must-try-list. It is sold in Penang but no need to try also know it won’t be as nice as the ones in Puchong or Klang. Simply because Dry Bak Kut Teh is the creation of a whiz kid from Yap Chuan Restaurant in Puchong. If you remembered, there was a competition organized by a local Chinese daily in search for the top 10 or 100 Bak Kut Teh in Malaysia. This kid, then 14 submitted his own version of Bak Kut Teh and that earned him the Bak Kut Teh King status. Whoa.. great achievement.. and to think that I may don’t even know how to cook instant noodle when ... read more

Review: Restaurant Wong Fook Kee

Malaysia

WFK - Duck and harm choy soup
babe_kl writes: On the day I posted up the Harm Choy Tong (Pickled Mustard Cabbage Soup), I was secretly hoping for a bowl to warm me up on that super cold afternoon (it was raining heavily that day). Sighhh but have to wait for weekend before I could cook another pot. Fate would have it when we decided to drop by Restaurant Wong Fook Kee at Tengkat Tong Shin. Whilst ordering, they ask if we wanted any soup, hubby asked what kinda soup. When the words "harm choy ngarp" (pickled mustard cabagge and duck soup) came up, hubby quickly said yes... hahaha he's a soup lover. Later I confessed to him that I was hoping for some that afternoon and he ... read more

Lao-ish Dilled Fish Soup

Malaysia

Dill1
Robyn Eckhardt writes: Dill and tua nao (fermented soy beans). Northern Thais stir-fry the two together with garlic and chilies and eat the dish with sticky rice I'm the sort of cook that lights upon an ingredient, falls in love (or falls in love again, if I'm reliving an old infatuation), does it to death, and then moves on. The affair is usually intense, torrid ... then one day my eye and taste buds alight on something else, and it's over. I've had a thing going with dill since I wrote this post on bitter flavors in Lao cuisine. This fling of ours, dill and I, has shown surprising staying power; it's been almost four months and ... read more

boo_licious writes: Reunion appetizerBusy! Busy! Busy! Sorry but the blog has been sadly ignored these few days...Nevertheless the eating still continues though. My uncle and his family are down from Hong Kong and China these few days for Ching Ming. We did the deed yesterday - easy and painless as there were no crowds of people jostling for space in the cemetery. Am amazed at how clean the Hokkien cemetery looks now. Almost could not recognise it.Chicken herbal soupWe had this last night, since we didn't want to travel too far. My first time trying out the food from Reunion's menu. I love the mirrors, sheer curtains ... read more

The Ephemeral Puff

Malaysia

Sk_curry_puff_1
Robyn Eckhardt writes: He arrived in a cloud of (exhaust) smoke, four yellow plastic trays of curry puffs strapped to the back of his motorcycle. 'Puffs?' he asked, but we brushed him off. Yeah, yeah, curry puffs - a dime a dozen in this country. Besides, we were too focused on our clay pot of spicy gut soup to be distracted by mere pastry. Then he laid a tray on the table and lifted its clear plastic tarp to reveal the biggest, fattest, most beautiful puffs we'd ever seen. We reconsidered. We bought two. After finishing our soup and mopping our brows we pondered the puffs - exquisite works of pastry art they were, disks of layer upon ... read more

Jaya Palace Restaurant

Malaysia

teckiee writes: I no longer have to travel down to Imbi for Imbi Palace because they have (not so) recently open a new branch in Asia Jaya area! Wee!It was Chinese New Year, and also my Dad's birthday when I brought them here for dinner. Dad always says that he is up for anything, but I know he prefers Chinese compared to other cuisines. Started off with the appetizer, ikan bilis (anchovies), long beans, and sweet potatoes, all together. Sweet and spicy. Pan fried vegetables with scallops. I like the way they have prepared the vegetables, the celery, Enoki mushrooms and Macadamia nuts were fried until ... read more

BBQ Quarter Chicken
vkeong writes: I have been wanting to try Tony Roma’s for long already, so I took the chance when I was in Pavilion a while ago. I don’t know much about Tony Roma’s actually, I thought it should be similar to other Western food restaurant like TGIF or Chilis. The biggest difference I notice among them would be the atmosphere. Tony Roma’s is quiet and somewhat formal, TGIF is party-like while Chilis is somewhere between them. Food wise, it is definitely more upscale and same goes for the price. Ordering ala carte would be too expensive. So, I decided to take the set lunch which is advertised as costing less than RM20 instead.... read more

Harm Choy (pickled mustard cabbage)
babe_kl writes: **Non-Halal**I was lamenting to hubby one day that it must have been moons since I last drank Harm Choy Tong (Pickled Mustard Cabbage Soup in Cantonese) as my mom had stopped cooking that at home for years. According to one sinseh, this pickled mustard cabbage is bad for her knees. Sighhh...One day, we were eating at Fock Kee. Hubby asked me how come I didn't order Harm Choy Tong hahaha... I said I can make them myself. Moreover, Fock Kee serves complimentary soups for dinner :p. So the next day, I went to the market to grab some harm choy, tomatoes, soft tofu and some lean meat. I'm gonna use the guan tong (quick boil ... read more
