soup

boo_licious writes: Apologies for abandoning the blog last week, but work got in the way. Didn't help that I was not staying home, since I had to house-sit, while my mum was away in Beijing. This meant, it was difficult to upload pictures. Anyway, things should be looking brighter this week, since I am back home.Something quick and easy today - a new discovery at an old place. One of the saddest parts of work has been the lack of great food around the Shah Alam area. Takes me a while to discover new places to eat, since lunch is usually a splash and dash around the area. Hence, if anyone ... read more

Fukuya, One Bangsar

Lyrical Lemongrass writes: 1. Turning on my computer at home is like being in a new relationship.  “Will I get lucky tonight?” sums it all up.  And right now, it looks like my hymen is going to stay intact for a while longer. The recent elections has taught us one thing - more power to the people.   With flexed muscles, bulging biceps and a boost of foolhardy egocentric power, I now propose a vote against my broadband service provider.  I apologize for the lack of updates.  Blame it on them.  I’ll be glad to give you their number.  I hope you like elevator music. 2.  When I travel, I rarely buy souvenirs for myself.  ... read more

Noodles & Buns

Malaysia

team bsg writes: 1/2 a century long going strongerAyer Tawar, Perak ( 12 km from Sitiawan 60 km from Ipoh ) is a stunning part of Malaysia's changing political landscape and has probably the first state ever to have a local Chinese boy becoming deputy Mentri Besar ( Chief Minister ) . Some Bankers here swear that this place has also the highest per capita personal savings in the whole country...so how come ?Probably these might explain a little bit , who knows ? their most famous noodle wonder , "kampuang" ( dry noodles in dark sauce with reddish meat slices, really flat & lean )... read more

Pulutan_2
Robyn Eckhardt writes: The Philippines is blessed with a substantial body of good food writing, both serious literature and research by the likes of Edilberto Alegre and the late Doreen Fernandez, and less 'learned' but nonetheless enjoyable books by professional and amateur food lovers. An hour spent browsing the shelves in the food writing/cookbook section of a Manila bookstore never fails to deliver something surprising and delightful. In December I found a couple of gems: a thirty-year-old publication by the Philippine Banana Export Industry Association called 100+1 Banana Recipes, and a slim paperback called Pulutan: From the Soldiers' Kitchen. The first is what its title suggests, a straightforward collection of recipes (written in both Tagalog and ... read more

Dragon-I Restaurant @ Queensbay

Malaysia

Steamed Meat Dumpling
vkeong writes: I’ve been longing to try Dragon-I but have been put off by the expensive price of the food. It was not until I received my second Advertlets payout then only I decided to dine in Queensbay’s Dragon-I. Seriously, Dragon-I has a very good marketing strategy. They put up a glass before the entrance at all restaurants where you can see the chefs prepare noodles and meat dumplings. It always draws passer-bys and I am always one of them. So, kinda happy that I get to fulfill my curiosity finally. And the meal can be considered free because of the extra money, lol. Steamed meat dumplings (siu ... read more

Zing, Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia

Zing
Lyrical Lemongrass writes: The ads for the Heart of KL were appearing in the newspapers on a very frequent basis, and frankly, they were more exciting that the skewed local news I had begun to flip over by the pile.  My husband, being the more diligent and patient reader (I read headlines in my quest to finish reading the newspapers within 59 minutes), spotted the ad for Zing and its visiting celebrity chef, Chan Kwok, from Singapore’s Hua Tin restaurant.  Chef Chan Kwok is described as “the winner of numerous awards including Best Asian Ethnic Chef at the 2005 World Gourmet Summit. He is also author of the recently released book ‘Chan Kwok - A ... read more

On the Saigon Snail Trail

Malaysia

Bun_oc_5
Robyn Eckhardt writes: For many food-obsessed travelers to Vietnam the Holy Grail is a fantastic pho. Which is a shame, really, because in the course of a single-minded quest for the ultimate version of this northern Vietnamese soup noodle many equally worthy noodle dishes are bound to be overlooked. Bun oc (snail and rice noodle soup), for instance, consistently flies under the foreign chowhound's radar. Yet this combination of thin rice noodles with one or another member of the molluscan class of Gastropoda in flavorful broth - also a specialty of the north - is brilliant, easily as delicious as the finest bowl of pho. It certainly was a favorite of a certain formerly Vietnam-based blogger. ... read more

boo_licious writes: One of my favourite places to dine at the moment, at the Gardens, is this little place next to Isetan, serving good food and yummy desserts. I love the clean look of this place - especially the green sofas (currently my fav colour) and the repainting of kopitiam chairs and tables to a soothing green and pastel blue.Mushroom and 3 Cheese Melt on Toasted Multigrain (RM18)Food served here is fresh with an emphasis on natural and organic ingredients. I especially love their desserts as, they use real butter and unbleached organic flour. Makes a difference in taste. Crispy Duck Salad with Pear ... read more

Fish Head Noodles

Malaysia

teckiee writes: It's time again. A week of secondary. And an annoying week of primary 24 hours, 7 days a week on-call support. The standard life of anyone in the IT support line. My last dinner before jail time was fish head noodles with UnkaLeong. *Lucky lucky* because I will be skipping the noodle makan'ing session coming Sunday (jail time ma).I have no idea how to get to this place, but it's along Jalan Raja Laut, turn left at the junction opposite of the PAS (yes, the political party) building. Ong Lai is on the left, BSG (back street) style. When I took a sip of ... read more

GFX - pay and order at cashier
babe_kl writes: **Non-Halal**In between our rides at the theme park, we hurried off for a quick dinner instead of going to our regular place. Not so sure what to have we decided to head over to Highlands Hotel to check out the eating places since hubby didn't want to walk so far to First World. Found this Restoran Good Friends Express since I didn't want to wait and order dishes from the restaurant under the same name next door. This Good Friends Express is a self-service fast food restaurant ala Chinese. All you need to do is place your order and pay at the cashier. Then you move down the line to collect your order. The menu is ... read more
