Robyn Eckhardt writes: The Philippines is blessed with a substantial body of good food writing, both serious literature and research by the likes of Edilberto Alegre and the late Doreen Fernandez, and less 'learned' but nonetheless enjoyable books by professional and amateur food lovers. An hour spent browsing the shelves in the food writing/cookbook section of a Manila bookstore never fails to deliver something surprising and delightful. In December I found a couple of gems: a thirty-year-old publication by the Philippine Banana Export Industry Association called 100+1 Banana Recipes, and a slim paperback called Pulutan: From the Soldiers' Kitchen. The first is what its title suggests, a straightforward collection of recipes (written in both Tagalog and ... read more

Shah Alam Stadium Sunday Morning Market

Malaysia

boo_licious writes: Petai aka stink beansLast Sunday, we finally managed to make it down to the Shah Alam stadium's morning market. I have been dying to go look at the place for quite some time but due to work commitments, it has been placed in the back burner.Beautiful purple brinjals or auberginesThe place is pretty happening with a Pasar Tani (a kind of farmers market) with lots of local produce, food stalls and stalls selling second hand items. boo_licious writes: Oyster on iceI first caught wind of the Latest Recipe, Le Meridien Hotel's new cafe at last year's Food Bloggers gathering from Riz of Fried Chillies fame. Oozing praises for the new concept, he made it sound so tempting, I wanted to abandon the gathering and bolt straight away for the cafe. The magic word, he kept repeating was "Teppanyaki Ice Cream". Hold on, my brain was working out, "one can't fry ice cream on a teppan since it will melt right???"Prawns My curiosity was piqued hence, when I received an invitation to dine with Paprika, Lyrical Lemongrass and Cheryl Lum (thanks so much, ... read more

Lyrical Lemongrass writes: When I first saw The HSS’ pictures of Latest Recipe, I cursed.  No, no, it wasn’t an imaginary curse.  I sent him an SMS with some colourful language.  Firstly, I was jealous of his pictures, and secondly, I wasn’t there.  (Commercial break:  This dude takes FABULOUS pictures.  I have an altar for him in my garden where my pet frog, Tom, lives.  Tom worships him too.  End of commercial.)  So when I received an invitation to dine at Latest Recipe, I didn’t give two hoots whether The HSS was invited.  I was going, baby, and I was going to taste some of that gorgeous psychedelic teppanyaki ice cream which ... read more

vkeong writes: Mantis Shrimp Village is a newer seafood restaurant to open in Bukit Tambun. It is located just beside the toll plaza exiting Bukit Tambun to Juru and one of the first few restaurants you would see. This big restaurant has a sign board so huge you just wouldn’t miss it. Anyway I have heard people say that the deeper you go into Bukit Tambun, the more expensive the seafood would be. This post will prove that statement wrong! Usually we would order sweet sour or curry for crabs. But since this is a new establishment, we asked for their recommendation and took it - ... read more

boo_licious writes: Roti Arab sold with curryYesterday marked the first day of fasting for the Muslims and as usual I hit the Ramadan Bazaar to check out the wide array of food. Since I was within the area, I ended up at the Kelana Jaya one. It was packed with people who were eager to check out what the stalls had to offer. Even a reporter was hanging around the area complete with a camera man to interview the stall owners.Onde Onde or Buah MelakaOne marked difference is some stalls are not at their usual spots hence it makes it slightly harder to trace old favourites. ... read more
